Harvesting trees and turning them into lumber, panels, boxes and paper involves highly dangerous work. At Weyerhaeuser, deaths and serious injuries had been part of the landscape since the company’s founding. Senior leadership was determined to change that. I edited a special edition of Weyerhaeuser Today that covered several incidents in grim detail — and outlined the steps the company was taking to change the culture and prevent future accidents. In the year following, the company went 365 days without a fatality for the first time ever.
